In October 2016, Awadhesh Kumar Jha—then a business leader at Fortum India—was flying back from Helsinki when he saw Delhi shrouded in a thick, grey haze. The city was suffocating under vehicular emissions. That moment sparked a mission.

Fortum, a Finnish leader in clean energy, had already pioneered EV charging in the Nordics. Awadhesh asked: Why not India?

At the time, EVs were rare, and public charging was virtually nonexistent. But under his leadership, Fortum took the first bold step—launching Fortum Charge & Drive India in 2017, now known as GLIDA.

Breaking Barriers

The biggest hurdle wasn’t tech—it was regulation. Was EV charging electricity resale? If so, it required a license. Awadhesh and his team studied global models and worked closely with Indian policymakers. Their efforts paid off: in 2018, EV charging was officially recognized as an “energy transformation service,” clearing the path for private players.

Building the Future

GLIDA launched its first public chargers in Hyderabad in 2018. To build trust and change behavior, it offered free charging for a year. By 2019, it had a loyal user base—and momentum.

Today, GLIDA is one of India’s leading Charge Point Operators (CPOs), with:
